Q Before attempting this discussion, be sure to review the materials about documentary photography in Canvas. Click on "Modules" and look for Week 3. Three questions for this discussion: FIRST — In your own words, what constitutes a "job well done" for a documentary photographer? • Make specific references to Depression-era documentary photograph, especially Dorothea Lange and Paul Taylor. SECOND — now that we live in a world where we have such immediate access to so many documentary images, what is the effect on us? • Does it make us empathize MORE with the subjects of the photography, or does it desensitize us to suffering? • Write a little bit to develop your thoughts. THIRD — If you could go back a few months to a time before the pandemic, what is a scene that you might photograph to document life as it existed then? • The scene is perhaps imaginary, but still be detailed — what are the details in a good documentary photograph that would teach people about life before the pandemic? • Explain a bit about what would make each scene so significant, given what you now know about the world. • Explain one connection between the scene you envision here, and any idea about documentary photography introduced in the materials in Canvas. • No actual photographs are required for this assignment, but if you have ONE good pre-pandemic photo that you took, you are welcome to include it. Be sure to write about the photograph, too. Be sure any photographs you include are suitable for public viewing. Reply to TWO classmates, and write enough to carry the conversation forward, at least 100 words or so. Checklist • As always in this class, write more than one paragraph. o Since there are three prompts here, it's a good idea to write (at least) three paragraphs. • Make specific references to the materials in Canvas; use details appropriately to support your ideas. • In answering the questions, be sure to exercise some careful thought and independence of mind, and also be sure to ground your thoughts in the real facts.
